そんなPuffin Booksだけれど、ペンギン一家の長男（Penguin Books）や次男（Pelican Books）とは違って早くからフリルの付いた衣装＝ピクトリアルなカバーでお粧し。これは、初代編集長であるEleanor Grahamの意向。彼女が最初にAllen Laneから児童向けのペーパーバック叢書について相談を受けた際、彼女の脳裏によぎったのは——“I had seen too many cheap series of children's books – out-of-copyright 'classics', badly printed on rough paper, unillustrated. (...) To make myself quite plain, I told him I should not want to have anything to do with paperbacks on that level”（引用はPenguin Collectors Society が年一回刊行しているMiscellanyの1991年版、Miscellany 6: Happy Birthday Puffinより）。これにつづいて彼女が言ったのは——“but if he was thinking of a series comparable with his Penguins, with the best of the new work then being done for children... why, then I'd be on – my goodness, l'd be on!”。


こうしてPuffin Story Booksの編集を担うようになったEleanor Grahamですが、折しも戦争中だったこともあり、作業は思うように捗らず、ようやく刷り上がった第一回配本5冊（Worzel Gummidge by Barbara Todd、Cornish Adventure by Derek McCulloch、The Cuckoo Clock by Mrs Molesworth、Garram the Hunter by Herbart Best、Smoky by Will James）を目の当たりにしたときも、彼女は気持ちが沈み込むのを抑えることが出来なかったとか（When I saw the finished copies my heart sank, for I could see the bokseller's dilemma. You couldn't make a show of five thin little books, however good.）。そんな彼女がようやく満足できる1冊を世に送りだすことが出来たと実感したのが、1948年のA Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson & Eve Garnett。以下、やはりMiscellany 6: Happy Birthday Puffinよりその出版経緯——

Allen Lane and I had spoken often about A Child's Garden of Verses, which we both wanted in the series. He said he would pay for a beautifully illustrated edition, and I chose Eve Garnett for it. A Iot of care was taken over the printing; indeed, the blocks were made more than once before the final form was achieved. I was afraid that something might be lost in this refining, but very little was. The cover always delighted me, with the wreath of pink-lipped daisies so in harmony with Stevenson's verses. To this I wrote the first of my prefaces on How the Book Came to be Written. It was number twenty-two in the series, and came out in 1948, seven years after the first Puffin saw print.

創刊から7年が経過してようやく通巻22号。年平均にすれば3冊そこそこ。よくこれで打ち切りにならなかったものです（実際、初期のPenguin Booksには、Ptarmigan BooksやPeacock Booksなど、創刊からほどなく姿を消したペーパーバック叢書も少なくありません）。その後、Eleanor Grahamが編集長の座を引く1961年までに全部で151羽の「ツノメドリ」が誕生。その中には、The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. LewisやThe Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier など、現在も読み継がれているロングセラーも。なんか、好きなんだなー、ワタシ、このレトロチックな海鳥 が。折しも今日（たった今！　配達予定日は明日だったんだけれどね。Thank you, Amazon!）、届いた1冊の本。創刊70周年を記念して5月27日にPenguin Booksから刊行された、その名もPuffin by Design: 70 Years of Imagination 1940 - 2010 by Phil Baines。ふーむ、どれどれ。あー、なるほど。へー、そうだったのか。あっ！　こ、これは……。
